Tom Homan, appointed as the Trump administration’s “border czar,” has a security detail that costs U.S. taxpayers approximately $1 million per month. By the end of 2025, the total cost for his security is projected to reach around $12 million.
About $500,000 per month is spent on salaries for the agents assigned to Homan’s protection, while the remaining costs include airfare, hotel bills, and other travel-related expenses. Homan is protected by a rotating team of roughly 30 special agents from Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), providing round-the-clock coverage. His security detail includes a four-vehicle motorcade, which is more extensive than the two-car packages typically used for cabinet members.
Justification and Criticism
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has cited “dangerous rhetoric” and an increase in threats, including doxxing and death threats, as reasons for the heightened security. And Homan himself has publicly stated that he receives constant threats, necessitating 24/7 protection, including state troopers stationed at his home.
Some administration officials have raised concerns about the expense, describing the security measures as “extravagant” and noting that they divert resources from other senior leaders, including cabinet members.
Homan’s position is not cabinet-level, which has fueled debate over whether such extensive protection is warranted.
